Petrus Drabbe (1887-1970) worked as a missionary linguist (belonging to the catholic order Missionaries of the Sacred Heart (msc)) on the south coast of New Guinea for 25 years, from 1935 until 1960. Most of the primary data used within the Awyu-Ndumut project come from his meticulous and excellent language descriptions. Drabbe showed himself a true and inspiring linguist when he said
"I have told you that I have always done my work with much pleasure, because every language is a fascinating miracle and it is an intense pleasure to analyze such a miracle, because one constantly makes new and unexpected discoveries".
