Learning through EDU-BLOG

drs. Roos van der Zwaard
Capaciteitsgroep Engelse taal en cultuur
Universiteit van Amsterdam
Tilburg University

Students of English Language and Culture from the University of Amsterdam have closely collaborated  at an interdisciplinary level with Australian students of Drama and Education from Deakin University, Melbourne. The collaboration culminated in an interactive theatre performance for both a live and a digital audience in both Amsterdam and Melbourne.

This digital interchange project consisted of joint research, script-writing and ultimately joint performance through videoconferencing. In the process, a variety of communication tools were used to facilitate the collaboration, such a Facebook, Google Docs and live videoconferencing.

With this project a valuable framework for authentic communication was created within an academic language learning environment, based on current learning theories such as Task-Based learning and Computer-Mediated Communication. This is also the focus of Rose van der Zwaard’s current doctoral research.

During the presentation Rose will discuss the specific aspects of the digital collaboration project and the lessons learned from it. In addition, she will show footage from the digital performances and the new website that has been launched recently (http://www.deakin.edu.au/arts-ed/scca/dtp/index.htm).
