Citing, paraphrasing, plagiarizing: Working with the digital referencing module RefCite

Elke van Cassel
Language Center Tilburg University

These days, students seem to be aware that they should avoid plagiarism, but they find it difficult to determine what is permitted and what is not, especially when it comes to quoting and paraphrasing. With the digital referencing module RefCite Tilburg University offers its students a clear guideline for incorporating sources into their texts. Instead of focusing on punishment and consequences, the module highlights how to cite sources correctly and why this is so important in an academic context.

In this workshop you will be introduced to the RefCite module, which is the result of a close cooperation between the Language Center and Library and IT Services at Tilburg University. The module can be used by students for self-study purposes, but can also be used by teachers, who can incorporate it into their teaching.

After a brief introduction about the origins and goals of the module, we will discuss the common ground between writing and information skills, specifically concerning (the prevention of) plagiarism. During this discussion, the participants will exchange examples from their own teaching experience, which we will then use to explore the RefCite module.
